Screw conveyors are versatile and robust systems engineered to transport bulk materials — from dry powders and granules to semi-sluggish or viscous substances — with precision and efficiency. These systems are ideal for horizontal, inclined or vertical conveyance of solids in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food, chemicals and mining.
The underlying design centres around a helical blade (known as the flight) coiled around a shaft and housed in a trough or tube. When the shaft rotates, the material is propelled forward in a controlled flow. Because the volume transferred is proportional to the shaft rotation rate, screw conveyors offer excellent metering and feed control capabilities.
With appropriate engineering—such as selection of pitch, flight geometry, trough design and material of construction—screw conveyors can handle challenging applications including sticky, abrasive or heat-sensitive products. Features like enclosed tubular housings allow dust-tight or vapor-tight operation, and customised flight designs facilitate uniform discharge, minimal segregation and reduced material degradation.
